Scotland has a rich football history, hosting the world's second-oldest football association (the Scottish Football Association, founded in 1873) and the world's oldest national football cup. The professional Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL)organizes the national league and cup competitions. While the Scotland national team played in the first international match in 1872 and has qualified for several World Cups and European Championships, they have yet to advance beyond the first group stage.
